While this may appear to be a merely esthetic issue, exposed end-grains can become rough and crack or split over time. The solution to this problem, which is more than just an aesthetic one, is a picture framed decking. It's also a matter of safety! Deck picture framing refers to the installation of a border around the outside edges of your deck that adds visual interest while also clearly defining the deck edges and drawing attention to any stairs.
We trim most of the composite decks we build with picture-frame borders in a color that contrasts with the field decking. Many deck builders simply cut miter joints at the corners of such borders, and while these looks good at first, they don't last. Because composite decking and PVC trim move, shift, shrink, and expand with changes in humidity and temperature, those perfectly cut mitered corners can look terrible in a matter of days.
